| Conducting an Energy Audit
Would you like to reduce the amount of energy your business consumes? Do you want to improve energy efficiency and save money on operating costs? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions your business would benefit from an energy audit. An energy audit identifies where energy is being used and assesses opportunities to reduce waste. Along with power factor studies, thermal imaging initiatives and programs to reduce peak energy loads, energy audits are the most successful way to reduce energy consumption and improve your bottom line. There are two options when conducting an energy audit: a self-audit using materials available from your energy supplier, or employing the services of a professional energy auditor. The former option is a good place to start if you just wish to compare your energy accounts with estimated costs based on your appliances' energy ratings. Many energy retailers have audit guides available which provide a rough outline to the cost of running your appliances. |
You can also obtain Energy Smart guides, which are produced by the NSW Department of Energy, Utilities and Sustainability, from your energy supplier. These guides provide energy efficiency information and advice, covering everything from lighting to insulation.
An energy audit carried out by a professional is the next logical step. It is also a suitable first step for time-poor individuals, who are in position to act immediately on any recommendations made by the auditor. Different levels of audit can be requested, from an overview to a detailed walk-through of your premises.
A qualified engineer can identify opportunities for savings and provide a written report which helps you create a plan of action. Typically, a saving of five to ten per cent can be achieved through the implementation of a well executed energy management strategy. The greatest savings can usually be found in heating, ventilation and air conditioning improvements.
